Hillsdale College Hosts 170th Annual Commencement Ceremony and Hosts Keynote Speaker Jordan B. Peterson

The annual ceremony recognized top university graduates, outstanding seniors, retired professors, professor of the year Matthew Gaetano and entrepreneur Bill Atherton

HILLSDALE, Mich., May 7, 2022 /PRNewswire/ — Hillsdale College celebrated its 170th launch on Saturday May 7. The College has held this ceremony every year since 1860. Jordan B. Petersonauthor, clinical psychologist and professor emeritus at University of Torontodelivered the commencement address, and the College awarded honorary degrees and recognized top university graduates.

Larry P. Arnnpresident of Hillsdale College, thanked the faculty, administration, parents and friends of the College for making the ceremony possible. He encouraged the graduating class to live the things they learned at Hillsdale.

“You’re great people, and we’re going to miss you a lot here. Except you’re not leaving, after all, are you? You’re going to live the life you set out to live, and you’re going to live in contact with this College, with is a partnership that includes, until death do us part, and beyond.”

Dr. Arnn then introduced Dr. Peterson, who addressed the senior class and encouraged them to live in a way that helps them find purpose in life.

“If you’re going to act ethically…you act in a way that works for you now, works for you tomorrow, works for you next week, and next month, and next year, and in five years, and 10 years from now, and for you and your family, and your friends, and your wider community, and all of this simultaneously. It’s a place to find purpose in your life – to deal with this balancing act simultaneously.

Three hundred and twenty-nine undergraduate students from the Class of 2022 have graduated. Twenty graduate students received their degrees.

Dr. Arnn paid tribute to five faculty members who retired this year: Barbara Bushy from the art department; Ken Hayes from the Department of Physics; jim stephens from the department of philosophy, Michael Sweeney of the accounting department, who retired in December 2021; Dan York from the Department of Biology. Dr Arnn also recognized the 2022 Teacher of the Year – Matthew Gaetano from the history department — as well as this year’s top university graduates and outstanding seniors.
