ONLINE COLLEGE COURSES @ ECA

Dear Students and Parents of Elmira Christian Academy,

We are now looking into offering both Advanced Placement and College-Credit courses at ECA!!!  We had good success our first year ('04-'05) through CCC and wish to continue offer this option to interested Seniors.

The idea is that students should be able to take AP or actual college courses at ECA.  Students electing to take such courses will have access to the computer lab (or the computers in the Math or Science Labs) during the school day.  In this way, there will be a scheduled time for each student to daily work on his/her online courses during regular school hours, hopefully free from distractions, while under partial teacher supervision.

The online courses we are most impressed with so far are offered through the SUNY Learning Network .  They offer hundreds of courses that would be appropriate for High School Seniors, starting in either the fall or spring semester.  Be sure to check out their online catalog.  Also, you will be interested in their letter, below.

AP courses are offered thru Apex Learning.  They offer regular AP courses in a variety of subjects, including the sciences, math, languages, and history.  Browse their online catalog, noting which courses are AP.

Finally, remember that Corning Community College offers evening courses at their main campus and various locations in the area.   These courses can be taken after school, while much of the homework can be done during the free periods that many Seniors find they have here at ECA.  If interested, check out the CCC website.

Please note that online courses are NOT for everyone!  But they are great for many people, especially considering that much of the work will be during a scheduled school period each day.  Remember, too,  that these courses tend to fill up early; that is why we are giving you this information now, even though all the details are not yet worked out.  So if you are interested in this--please click on the links below for more information.  PLEASE feel free to contact us with any  questions!!!!  You may call the school, e-mail us, or if you prefer to call during the evenings, you may call me at my home at  796-2778.

For the Kingdom,

Marty

Letter from James Harris of the SUNY Learning Network

Thank-you for your interest in the SUNY Learning Network.

Many of the courses offered through the SUNY Learning Network are lower level undergraduate courses that may be taken by motivated high school students interested in earning college credits prior to graduation.  For a complete listing of courses offered through SLN, visit the "Prospective Students" section of the SLN web site located at SLN.suny.edu where you will find a link to the Summer and Fall 2004 course lists.  Within the course list is a search and sort option that allows students to sort by: Campus, Course Name, Discipline, Gen Ed, or Level.

Once students have determined the courses that they are interested in taking, the student will need to contact the registrar's office at the individual campus that offers the course to determine what specific steps need to be taken to register for the course(s).  Campus contact information is available on the SLN web site.

While students should always check with their advisor, credits earned in the SLN program are typically transferable.

If you have any additional questions, do not hesitate to contact me via e-mail at james.harris@sln.suny.edu or by phone at 800.875.6269 ext. 4.
